Recent news have been bothering Costa Ricans: the local government approved an agreement with the U.S. and it will allow the entrance of 7000 marines. Yes, you read it right: seven thousand marines in our little country! Not only that, also warships, military helicopters and even combat planes! Icon_confused

That massive amount of military will supposedly help in the war against drugs, but... U.S. has one of the biggest amount of drug consumers in the world. Why don't they spend the money in education within their borders? Why don't the U.S. help their young fight against drugs instead of spending such a big amount of money and resources in another country? Why not send this amount of military to Mexico (where there are bigger problems)? Confused Probably because drugs are not the main reason they're here... Some people fear it has to be related to the strengthening bond between Nicaragua (our neighbor) and Iran. There are bigger issues here than drugs.

Costa Rica doesn't have army since 1948. Costa Ricans don't like the military. For many of us, these are not good news.
